Minnow

As I'm sure I've said, this county is full of water. And the water...full of fish. You have to look kind of closely at this picture to see them, but there are a LOT of fish!

The "Old" Coke Building

The "Old" Coke Building is on Main Street. The building's sign proclaims it to be a bottling company. It opened in 1921 but later moved to York County.
Around here, this is how a lot of people give directions. "You go down 17 until you get to where the old Heilig Meyers used to be..."

Of Course You Saw This Coming!

This is the sign for Ware Neck Produce - a favorite haunt from March to December. Ware Neck Produce had it's humble beginnings in the back of a pickup truck. It's now a very popular fresh produce, plant and seafood store which is sadly closed 3 months out of the year. I worked here one summer and it was a tough job. :) The owner is a wonderful man who remembers everyone's name. Most of the guests are great. It's actually pretty busy around tomato and apple seasons.

The One and Only

This is a really crappy picture of the only stoplight in Gloucester that is NOT on Rt 17. I love my little town.

Afternoon Paddle

Caught these two at Beaver Dam, our local resevoir. It was a beautiful day - so sunny. I love the sun on the water.

Tubs of Plants

These are next to Leigh and Nardozzi's bakery. I thought it was very creative. At the same time, it's a little strange.

Reflections

I'm not sure exactly why I like Gloucester so much. It could be the small-town atmosphere. It could be the familiarity. It could be that the county shuts down at 9 and then it's so peaceful. It could be because I feel completely safe here. Whatever the reason, this is my favorite place to be!

More Grilled Cheese Peas!

I'm not sure what part of Gloucester this represents. It was my nephew's lunch not long ago. Believe it or not, the peas were the favorite!
I think this is a happy, summer-time lunch!

Abingdon Episcopal Church

This is Abingdon Episcopal Church. It was built in 1755 and restored in the 1960s. This church is a cruciform style church which means it's built in the shape of a cross. The website I'm reading from says it's one of 8 colonial Virginia churches.

Morning swim

Slipping down into the water...
Geese are mean animals. Either they are terrified when you chase them with bread or they chase you, honking and flapping. And what kind of bird is as tall as your waist? (okay, lots but that doesn't make me feel any better). Anyway, I was pretty far away from these guys so I didn't feel too bad.

"New Books, Old-Fashioned Service"

Twice Told Tales, established 1991 (which believe it or not was 15 years ago!!) Originally it was in a much cuter building across the street. It was 2 floors with all of the children's books upstairs. Now it's in a bigger building with a little less charm. The people are still great though.

Close call

One of Gloucester's MANY backroads. This turn is sharp and maybe dangerous. The speed limit is 45 and there are always skid marks. You can't call yourself a good driver until you can survive Gloucester's back roads.

Furniture

Main Street boasts this charming brick building. The entire thing is maintained about as well as this sign but it has great potential.

Welcome to Gloucester!

Welcome to Gloucester County, VA! If you're coming from civilization, this is how you will know you're leaving it! :)

What I think is very interesting about this picture (the sign can be seen on the James P. Coleman Memorial Bridge) is the light. I think it's a sign that we're headed the right way!
